UK launches new Centre for the Three R's
The UK government increases their commitment to research into the Three R's
The UK government is to establish a national centre to promote "best practice" in animal experimentation.
The new institute, which will be called the National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement and Reduction of Animals in Research will develop a UK strategy for the implementation of the three R’s, fund high quality research in the three R’s, advise scientists on the three R’s and animal welfare and promote the acceptance of alternative methods for toxicity testing.
UK Science Minister Lord Sainsbury said, “No scientist wants to use animals, but sometimes it is absolutely necessary. However, I believe strongly that a major opportunity now exists to make progress in replacing, refining and reducing the use of animals and improving their welfare.”
